One app at a time. Paid for, used, and then judged.

I install one app, make it my only tool for that job for at least two weeks, pay retail for whatever it asks, and then write down whether it earned the money. Most of them do not. There are no affiliate links on this site and no review copies behind any of it.

PlateLens review: the only calorie tracker I stopped arguing with

Twenty-one days as my only food log. It is the one tracker in this category whose accuracy figure somebody outside the company has checked — and then a second lab checked again. That is the whole reason I kept it, and it is a lower bar than it should be.

Carb Manager review: the right tool for keto, and only for keto

Net carbs are the primary number rather than a setting you enable, which no general tracker does properly. Outside a ketogenic protocol there is little reason to choose it.

Todoist review: the task manager that survives being abandoned for three weeks

Natural-language input is fast enough that capture stops being a decision, and the app is forgiving when you stop using it. The free tier's five-project limit arrives sooner than it looks.

YNAB review: it works, it costs a lot, and the thing it teaches you is free

The method genuinely changes how people handle money, and the software is a good implementation of it. At around $109 a year it is one of the most expensive consumer subscriptions I have reviewed, and there is no free tier.

Fetch review: it does pay, and the maths is worse than the marketing implies

Nineteen days photographing every receipt I generated. It genuinely pays — and the effective hourly rate is low enough that whether it is worth it depends entirely on whether the effort feels like effort to you.

Adobe Scan review: an excellent free scanner that keeps pointing at a subscription

The scanning and OCR are genuinely the best free option on a phone. Almost every action you take eventually surfaces an Acrobat upsell, and the free export limits are not obvious until you hit them.
